Still cloaked in shop dust, this new dining table is almost awake, and ready to hit the gallery floor. Solid Cherry base, top, and extension leaves. Table top is 42" x 89", and comes with 2 leaves which are 18" wide each. Cherry has some beautiful curl and random gum characteristics. Top also features breadboard ends and Walnut pegs.
Marcus Studio scholars are wondering what took so long to bring this classic table back to the gallery !
Nice chance to shoot a dining table at the customer's house, which we delivered a few weeks ago. Figured Walnut with 2 seams of sap wood to extend the color range within the top and accentuate the length of the table (108").
Overall table designed for the room by architect Herb Seigle, metal base fabricated by Pittsburgh metal artist Francis Nowalk.
But when you've got Walnut planes to counter your hue, the scales can tip in your favor...
This set of stacked-lowboy and highboy dressers, implements a contrast of "plastic" and "organic" materials that runs through much of my work. For example, the solid pigmented varnish against the French Walnut tops and Wenge edging. The 2 pieces are modular, so they can stand by themselves or together. For example, the stacked asymetrical dresser can have its high side go right into a corner of the room. The low level can also double as a bench, for those of us needing some extra help putting on our shoes in the morning.
Drawers are dovetailed Maple boxes with full extension undermount glides with "soft-close" feature. Knobs are brushed stainless and leather-wrapped pulls.
We've also made these with an "Armoire" module instead of the Highboy.
"Mitre folding" is a technique that is especially enhanced by wood slabs which have their natural edges still intact. By mitre-cutting the length of the wood , the natural grain and edge of the piece are "folded" into a structural shape, while still evoking the character of the original tree. This Walnut slab is about to become a Mitre-Fold Bench for our gallery...
The Cherry top is laid out in a radial sunburst pattern, with an inlayed ebonized poplar and Sapele border. Pedestal base is solid Sapele.
